Baseball
Junior and Senior Leagues are available. Both leagues play by
rules that are adapted to challenge the athlete's abilities.
In Junior League, athletes hit off the tee and are assisted
by their buddies when needed. The Senior League was developed
for athletes with advanced skills and knowledge of the game
who are able to play at a faster pace and do not need a buddy
for assistance. This league also has teammates without disabilities
who provide support and benefit the team by encouraging and
helping the SACC athletes play to the best of their abilities.
Basketball
Athletes participate in half-court games and/or in work stations
that concentrate on various skills such as shooting, stretching
and exercising, dribbling, bounce passing and lay-up. The main
emphasis is the skills of the game.
Bowling
Teams bowl two games. Bowlers have the option of bowling with
or without gutter guards. Bowling ramps are available for those
needing assistance with rolling the ball.
Gymnastics
& Weight Training
Instruction is provided by the YMCA staff. Gymnastics is a very
basic beginning level program involving skills such as forward
rolls, walking on low balance beam, parallel bars, uneven bars
and the trampoline. The weight training program is for athletes
age 13 and above. It is an introduction to the form and technique
of weight training and is designed to help improve coordination
and strengthen muscles.
Martial
Arts/Kung Fu
Instructed by Sifu Rick Panico, the Hung Gar Kung Fu style of
self-defense is offered as an ongoing program throughout the
year. It provides individualized instruction to meet the needs
of each student. Discipline and self-control are the main emphasis.
Swimming
Instruction is provided by the YMCA staff. Each athlete's abilities
and skills are evaluated and then they are placed with an instructor
to promote good swimming skills.
Water
Exercise
Instruction is provided by the YMCA staff. Program includes
the use of paddles, noodles and kick boards for strengthening,
toning and cardio workouts. Athletes should be self-sufficient
in four feet of water, if not; a parent must assist them in
the water.
